I was born and raised in Upper Hutt, New Zealand, a town about 30 miles outside of the capital, Wellington. As a child I enjoyed reading (particularly the encyclopedia), hiking in the New Zealand bush, and like all other Kiwis, going to the beach. I was raised in a Plymouth Brethren background.
I hold a Bachelor of Arts degree in history and philosophy from Waikato University in New Zealand.
In 1978 I married my wife, Janet, (she was the sister of a friend), and together we have three children, an adopted son and two daughters. Our son lives in New Zealand, one daughter lives in Florida, and the other daughter lives in the United Kingdom.
For 10 years, along with Janet, I served as a missionary with Youth With A Mission (YWAM) in the Philippines and the United States. Much of the work I did with YWAM involved writing.
I never set out to be a writer. As I like to say, “Writing found me, not the other way around.” But from the time writing found me, I have never looked back. I’ve spent the past 26 years earning a living as a writer. For the first 12 years of my writing career I worked as a ghostwriter, before switching to writing the Christian Heroes: Then & Now and the Heroes of History series of books, which have kept Janet and me busy over the last 14 years. In all, Janet and I have written more than 150 books.
I was privileged to learn the craft of writing from another husband and wife writing team, John and Elizabeth Sherrill, who wrote The Cross and the Switchblade, The Hiding Place, God Smuggler, and many other classic Christian books. Of course, it also helped that I had an aptitude for writing.
More than anything else, when I write I love to tell a really good story in a way that keeps readers wanting to turn the pages as they read. That’s why writing the Christian Heroes and Heroes of History series have been so much fun for me to write. And while I like to see the books in print and people reading them, for myself, I derive the most enjoyment from the actual process of writing each book.
